"How did you attain all this knowledge?" Imaam Al-Sh'bee's answer was as follows: "By independency, by travelling through cities, by having patience like that of a donkey and by rising early like the rising of crows."

Ibn Uyaynah was asked: "Who amongst people is the most in need of seeking knowledge?" He said "The most knowledgeable (amongst them). An error from him is uglier."

“People need knowledge more than they need food and drink, because they need food and drink two or three times a day, but they need knowledge all the time.”

Ibn Mahdi and others have said: "The people of knowledge write what is for them and what is against them; while the people of desire do not write except what is for them".

ENGLISH:
"It's narrated that Sufyan At-Thawri (may Allaah be pleased with him) went to 'Asqalaan, but not a single person asked him (about the deen). He said: "Take me out of this land, for this is a land where knowledge dies!"

Khatteeb Al-Baghdadi narrates:
قال إسماعيل بن الفضل بن طاهر رأيت سليمان الشاذكوني في النوم فقلت ما فعل الله بك، يا أبا أيوب ؟
قال: غفر لي قلت: بماذا ؟ قال: كنت في طريق أصبهان فأخذني المطر وكان معي كتب، ولم أكن تحت سقف ولا شيء فانكببت على كتبي حتى أصبحت وهدأ المطر، فغفرالله لي بذلك
ENGLISH:
Ismaa'iel bin Al-Fadhl bin Tahir said:
"I saw Sulayman Al-Shadhakuni in my dream and I asked him: "How did your Lord treat you, yaa Abaa Ayoob!" He said: "He forgave me". Ik asked: "On what grounds?" He said: "I was on the road towards Asbahan, when suddenly rain overtook me. I had with me some books (of knowledge) but I could not find any shelter of any sort! So I covered the books with my body (preventing the rain to fall on them) until I woke up in the morning and the rain had stopped and because of this, Allah forgave me".

Jaabir Ibn Abdullah undertook a one month journey to the land Al-Shaam, in order to hear a single hadith from Ibn Unais, which was: "The people will be gathered barefooted, naked, and uncircumcised on the Day of Judgement".

"Salih the son of Imam Ahmad said: "A man saw an inkpot in my fathers hand, so he said: "O Abu Abdullah, you have reached such a high position, you are the Imam of the muslimeen! Until when will you carry that ink pot." He said : "With the ink-pot to the grave."
