Accompanying the poor...

Awn ibn ’Abdullaah, may Allaah have mercy on him, said:

صحبت الأغنياء فعظم همي لأني كنت أرى ثياباً أحسن من ثيابي ودابة أحسن من دابتي، ثم صحبت الفقراء بعد ذلك فاسترحت

ENGLISH:

"I accompanied rich people and there was no one more depressed/sad than me, if I saw a man with a better garment than me and a better riding animal it would depress/grieve me–so I accompanied the poor and [finally] relaxed."

NEDERLANDS:

"Ik vergezelde de rijken, maar het maakte mij verdrietig, want ik zag hen mooiere kleding dan mij dragen en betere rijdier berijden dan mij. Nadat ik de armen vergezelde, kwam mijn hart pas tot rust."

Persian Saying

A Persian saying:

وقتی دیدی نان و ماست ... نان را قاشق بساز

ENGLISH:

"When you only have bread and yoghurt ... use the bread as a spoon."

NEDERLANDS:

"Als je alleen brood en yoghurt hebt ... gebruik je brood als je lepel."

MEANING:

Instead of complaining about the lack of x, y and z, find alternative solutions to the problem.

Living from the dead and dead from the living

Ibn Taymiyah said :

فإن أحدا لا يقول‏:‏ إن بدن عبد الله أبيه أفضل من أبدان الأنبياء، فإن الله يخرج الحي من الميت، والميت من الحي

ENGLISH:

"So one does not say: "The body of Abdullah, the father (of the Prophet Muhammad) is better than the bodies of (other) Prophets (even though he begot the best of creation)... because verily, Allaah brings forth the living from the dead and the dead from the living."

NEDERLANDS:

"Dus we zeggen niet: "Het lichaam van Abdullah, de vader (van de Profeet Muhammad) is beter dan de lichamen van (andere) Profeten (ook al heeft hij de beste der schepping voortgebracht)... want voorwaar, Allaah brengt de levenden voort uit de doden en de doden uit de levenden."

["Majmu Al-Fatawa", 27/37].

"He who chases two birds..."

        من يطارد عصفورين يفقدهما معآ

“He who chases two birds, loses them both”

"Wie twee vogels achtervolgt, vangt geen van beiden."

To hate something Allah has granted...

Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Qayyim said:

"It is enough to hate something Allah has granted one, to know how disgusting it is to hate daughters."

True manhood

Ibn Al-Qayyim said :

والرجل هو الذي يخاف موت قلبه لا موت بدنه

ENGLISH:

“A man is the one who fears the death of his heart, not his body.”

NEDERLANDS:

"Een man is degene die de dood van zijn hart vreest, niet de dood van zijn lichaam."

"I have carried stones and iron"

Al-Zamakhshari narrates :

لقمان: يا بني حملت الحجارة والحديد، فلم أر أثقل من جار السوء

ENGLISH:

Luqmaan said: "O my son! I have carried stones and iron, but no burdon was heavier upon me than a bad neighbor!"

NEDERLANDS:

Luqman zei: "O mijn zoon! Ik heb stenen en ijzer gedragen, maar geen last was mij zwaarder dan een slechte buur!"

It has been narrated with a weak chain that the Prophet said:

الكلمة الحكمة ‏ ‏ضالة المؤمن ‏ ‏فحيث وجدها

ENGLISH:

"A word of wisdom is the lost property of a believer. He should seize it wherever he finds it."

NEDERLANDS:

"Een woord van wijsheid is de verloren voorwerp van de gelovige. Hij neemt het waar hij het ook aantreft."

["At-Tirmidhi", 4159].

"The tree is known by its fruit."

There is a saying , which can be traced back to the Bible :

الشجرة تعرف من ثمارها

“The tree is known by its fruit.”

“Uit de vrucht wordt de boom gekend.”

Other scholars have also said: Hearts are like vessels. When the content of the vessel is pure, then pureness will come out. When the content of the vessel is impure, then impurity will come out. So judge people by their apparant deeds.

Ghassaan Bin Al-Mufaddal Al-Ghulaabee said:

حدثني بعض أصحابنا قال جاء رجل إلى يونس بن عبيد فشكا إليه ضيقا من حاله ومعاشه واغتماما بذلك فقال أيسرك ببصرك مئة ألف قال لا قال فبسمعك قال لا قال فبلسانك قال لا قال فبعقلك قال لا في خلال وذكره نعم الله عليه ثم قال يونس أرى لك مئين ألوفا وأنت تشكو الحاجة

ENGLISH:

"Some of our associates narrated to me that a man came to Yunus bin Ubayd and complained of the hardship he was going through in his livelihood and of his anxiety because of it. So he said (to him), "Would you be happy to give up your eyesight for a hundred thousand (dinars, dirhams)?" He said, "No." He said, "Then what about your hearing?" He said, "No." He said, "And your tongue?" He said, "No." He said, "And your aql (intellect)?" He said, "No, [not] for any wants, needs." Then he reminded him of the favours of Allaah upon him after which he, Yunus, said: "I see that you have hundreds of thousands of (dinars, dirhams) yet you are complaining of need!"

NEDERLANDS:

"Een aantal van onze metgezellen hebben aan mij overgeleverd dat een man naar Yunus bin Ubayd kwam, en klaagde over zijn financiele omstandigheden, en zijn bezorgdheid erover. Dus Yunus vroeg aan hem: "Zou jij je ogen voor 100,000 (dinars, dirhams) inruilen?" Hij zei: "Nee." Yunus vroeg: "En je gehoor?" Hij zei: "Nee." Yunus vroeg: "En je tong?" Hij zei: "Nee." Yunus vroeg: "En je 'aql (verstand)?" Hij zei: "Nee, voor geen enkele prijs zal ik ze inruilen!" Toen herinerde Yunus hem aan alle zegeningen waar zich in bevind, en zei: "Ik zie dat je honderden duizenden (dirhams, dinars) bezit, en je bent aan het klagen."

Nobody does anything just for the sake of it. There are allways strings attached to it. A persian saying goes:

فریب باغبان رامخور ای گل *** گر اب میدهد گلاب میخواهد

ENGLISH:

"Don't be fooled by the gardener's kindness , O flower!
The water that you get, is for the roses he's expecting."

NEDERLANDS:

"Weest toch niet misleid door de vriendelijkheid van de tuinier , O bloem! Het water dat je krijgt, is voor de rozen waar hij op wacht."

God's blessings and man's ungratefulness

في هذه الحياة ، واحدة من الاختلافات الأساسية بين الله والإنسان ، أن الله يمنح ويصفح ، ولكن الإنسان يحصُل ويغفَل

In this life, one of the basic differences between God and human is that God gives and forgives, but human gets and forgets.

Doors of Goodness

Khaalid Ibn Ma’daan said:

إذا فتح لأحدكم باب خير فليسرع إليه فإنه لا يدري متى يغلق عنه

ENGLISH:

"When a door leading to good is opened up for one of you then he should hasten to it because you don’t know when it will be shut."

NEDERLANDS:

"Wanneer een deur tot goedheid voor een van jullie opent, dan moet hij zich ernaar haasten, want hij weet niet wanneer het weer sluit."

Wall or Bridge

في الحياة ، قد يرمي بعض الناس الحجارة في طريقك . والأمر يعتمد عليك ماذا ستفعل بها ، هل تجعل منها جدارا أو جسرا؟ تذكر أنك مهندس حياتك

ENGLISCH:

"In life, some people may throw stones in your path. It depends on you; what you will make of them, wall or bridge? Remember you are the architect of your life."

NEDERLANDS:

"In het leven , sommige mensen gooien stenen op je pad. Maak je daar een brug van of een muur? Weet: Jij bent de bouwmeester van je leven."

Beautiful heart or beautiful face

في الحياة ، إبحث عن قلب جميل ، ولكن لا تبحث عن وجه جميل . الأشياء الجميلة ليست بالضرورة جيدة ، ولكن الأشياء الجيدة هي دائما جميلة

ENGLISH:

"In life, search for a beautiful heart, not a beautiful face. Beautiful things are not always good, but good things are always beautiful."

NEDERLANDS:

"In het leven , zoek voor een mooie hart , niet een mooi gezicht. Mooie dingen zijn niet altijd goed, maar goede dingen zijn altijd mooi."

I love the saliheen pious

Abdullah Ibn Mobarak said:

أحب الصالحين ولست منهم وأبغض الطالحين وأنا شر منهم

ENGLISH:

"I love the saliheen (pious people) even though I'm not one of them, and I hate the taliheen (evil people) even though I (may be) worse than them."

NEDERLANDS:

"Ik houd van de saliheen (rechtgeschapen mensen) al behoor ik niet tot hen, en ik haat de taliheen (slechte mensen) , al ben ik (mischien) erger dan hen."
