The virtues of Imam Al-Bayhaqi

Ad-Dhahabi wrote:

وبلغنا عن إمام الحرمين أبي المعالي الجويني قال : ما من فقيه شافعي إلا وللشافعي عليه منة إلا أبا بكر البيهقي ، فإن المنة له على الشافعي لتصانيفه في نصرة مذهبه .
قلت : أصاب أبو المعالي ، هكذا هو ، ولو شاء البيهقي أن يعمل لنفسه مذهبا يجتهد فيه ، لكان قادرا على ذلك

ENGLISH:

"It has reached us that Imam Al-Haramain said: "There is no jurist of the Shafi'ee madhab except that he is indebted to Imam al-Shafi'ee except Abu Bakr al-Bayhaqi, for indeed al-Shafi'ee is indebted to him for the works he contributed to support his madhab." (Imam Dhahabi continues to say):... "This is correct. And if al-Bayhaqi desired to have his own madhab with which he would make ijtihad then he would have been capable of that."

"Het heeft ons bereikt dat Imam Al-Haramain zei: "Er is geen jurist van de Shafi'ie Madhab, behalve dat hij verschuldigd is aan Imam Al-Shafi'ie, behalve Abu Bakr Al-Bayhaqi, want Al-Shafi'ie is verschuldigd aan hem, wegens zijn steunende werken voor Shafie's Madhab." (Imam Dhahabi zegt): Dat klopt. En als Al-Bayhaqi had gewild om een eigen Madhab te starten en daarin zijn Ijtihad uit te voeren, dan zou hij daartoe in staat zijn."
