ENGLISH:

"Shaykh Ash-Shinqeetee who died on 1393H, took very little from this worldly life, and I used to see him and he could not differentiate between the values of different (notes within the same) currency, and he once said to me: "I came from my country (Mauritania) and with me is a treasure that is very seldom found, and it is contentment”.

"Shaykh Muhammad Al-Ameen Ash-Shanqeetee, die in 1393H stierf, nam weinig van de dunyaa. Ik zou hem ontmoeten en hij kon niet eens de verschillende muntsoorten van elkaar onderscheiden! Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd wrote:

إن بلغت منصباً، فتذكر أن حبل الوصل إليه طلبك للعلم

ENGLISH:

"If you attain status, then remember that the rope that helped you to reach it was seeking knowledge".

"Als je status verkrijgt, weet dan dat het koord waarmee je naar die positie klom, je zoektocht naar kennis was".

"He will know that he knows nothing"

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd wrote:

فقد قيل: العلم ثلاثة أشبار، من دخل في الشبر الأول، تكبر ومن دخل في الشبر الثانى، تواضع ومن دخل في الشبر الثالث، علم أنه ما يعلم

ENGLISH:

"It was said knowledge is three spans: Whosoever enters the first span will become arrogant, and whosoever enters the second span will become humble, and whosoever enters the third span will know that he knows nothing".

NEDERLANDS:

"Er was gezegd dat kennis drie stadia kent: Degene die de eerste stadia binnentreedt wordt arrogant, degene die de tweede stadia binnentreedt wordt nederig en degene die de derde stadia binnentreedt zal weten dat hij niets weet!"

"Do not compare us to them"

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd writes:

وقد كان عبد الله بن المبارك إذا ذكر أخلاق من سلف ينشد:
لا تعرضن بذكرنا مع ذكرهم ليس الصحيح إذا مشى كالمقعد

ENGLISH:

"Abdullaah Ibn Mubarak, (may Allah be pleased with him), used to say, in poetry if the manners of the salaf were mentioned: "Do not compare us to them, for the sound person who walks, is not the same as the crippled one".

NEDERLANDS:

"Abdullah Ibn Mubarak zou de volgende lijnen van poëzie oplezen, als de manieren van de salaf werden genoemd: "Vergelijk ons niet met hun, want degene die rechtop liep is niet gelijk aan de invalide".

"Will you not write a book on zuhd?"

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd writes:

وعن محمد بن الحسن الشيباني رحمه الله تعالى لما قيل له: ألا تصنف كتابا في الزهد؟ قال: قد صنفت كتاباً في البيوع يعنى:الزاهد من يتحرز عن الشبهات، والمكروهات، في التجارات، وكذلك في سائر المعاملات والحرف

ENGLISH:

"It was narrated that when it was said to Muhammad Ibn Hasan Al-Shaybani: "Will you not write a book on zuhd?" He replied: "I have written a book on transactions", meaning: The true acetic person is the one who is cautious from falling into the shubuhaat (matters of halaal and haraam which are unclear), and things which are disliked, whether in business or other transactions and professions".

NEDERLANDS:

"Er is overgeleverd dat tegen Muhammad Ibn Hassan Al-Shaybani Al-Hanafi werd gezegd: "Schrijft u dan geen boek over zuhd (ascisme)?" Saykh Bakr Abu Zayd writes:

ومن دقيقه ما أسنده الذهبي في ترجمة عمرو بن الأسود العنسي المُتوفى في خلافة عبد الملك بن مروان رحمه الله تعالى: أنه كان إذا خرج من المسجد قبض بيمينه على شماله، فسئل عن ذلك؟ فقال: مخافة أن تنافق يدي. قلت: يمسكها خوفاً من أن يخطر بيده في مشيته، فإن ذلك من الخيلاء

ENGLISH:

"Amongst the things that Ad-Dhahabi narrated in the biography of Amr ibn Al-Aswad Al-Ansi who died in the Khilafah of Abdul Malik Ibn Marwan is : "... that when he was leaving the masjid he took his left hand with his right, so when he was asked about his, he replied: "Out of fear that my hand will make a gesture of hypocrisy". I (Ad-Dhahabi) say: He held it out of fear that his hand would swing, for such an action is considered haughtiness".

"Tot de zaken die Ad-Dhahabi onder de biografie van Amr Ibn Al-Aswad Al-Ansi noemde, die in de tijd van Khaliefah Abdul Malik Ibn Marwan leefde, was: "... "Do not make your heart like a sponge"

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd wrote:

لا تجعل قلبك كالسفنجه تتلقى ما يرد عليها، فاجتنب إثارة الشبه وإيرادها على نفسك أو غيرك، فالشبه خطافة، والقلوب ضعيفة

ENGLISH:

"Do not make your heart like a sponge that absorbs everything that it comes accross, and avoid arrousing shubuhaat (dubious issues) in your mind or (the minds of) others, because dubious issues are a swift abductors (of the heart) and the hearts are weak".

NEDERLANDS:

"Maak je hart niet zoals een spons die alles absorbeert waar die mee in aanraking komt, en vermijd het nadenken over twijfelachtige zaken (shubuhat) voor jezelf en anderen, want twijfelachtige zaken zijn valkuilen en de harten zijn zwak".

"Not from the scrolls and the depths of books"

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd writes:

الأصل في الطلب أن يكون بطريق التلقين والتلقي عن الأساتيذ، والمثافنة للأشياخ، والأخذ من أفواه الرجال لا من الصحف وبطون الكتب

ENGLISH:

"The basis of acquiring knowledge should be by the way of dictation and acquisition from the teachers (ustaadh), and by being in  the  cintunous company of the scholars (shuyoekh) and taking from the mouths of rijaal (men) and not from the scrolls and the depths of books!"

NEDERLANDS:

"De basis principe in het verkrijgen van kennis is de dictatie en overname van de leraar, en in gezelschap zijn van de geleerden en het nemen van kennis uit de monden van rijaal (mensen) en niet uit scrollen en dieptes der boeken!"
