"Knowledge is what comes from the Sahaba"

Al-Azwa'ee said:

العلم ما جاء به أصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، فما كان غير ذلك فليس بعلم

ENGLISH:

"Knowledge is what comes from the [core rulings] of the Companions of Muhammad and that which does not come from a single one of them is not knowledge."

NEDERLANDS:

"Kennis is hetgeen dat afkomstig is van de metgezellen van Muhammad, vrede zij met hem. Dus al hetgeen niet van hen afkomstig is, valt niet onder 'ilm (kennis)."

The Prophet said: "Be firm, O Uhud!"

Al-Bukhaari narrated:

حدثني محمد بن بشار حدثنا يحيى عن سعيد عن قتادة أن أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه حدثهم أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم صعد أحدا وأبو بكر وعمر وعثمان فرجف بهم فقال اثبت أحد فإنما عليك نبي وصديق وشهيدان

ENGLISH:

Anas Ibn Malik narrated: "The Prophet once climbed the mountain of Uhud with Abu Bakr, 'Umar and 'Uthman. The mountain shook with them. The Prophet said (to the mountain): "Be firm, O Uhud! For on you there are no more than a Prophet, a Sidiq and two martyrs".

"Verily, Mu'adh was an Ummah (nation)"

Ibn Katheer writes:

وقال الشعبي : حدثني فروة بن نوفل الأشجعي قال :
قال ابن مسعود : إن معاذا كان أمة قانتا لله حنيفا ، فقلت في نفسي : غلط أبو عبد الرحمن ، إنما قال الله : إن إبراهيم كان أمة فقال : أتدري ما الأمة وما القانت ؟ قلت : الله أعلم ، قال : الأمة الذي يعلم الناس الخير . والقانت : المطيع لله ورسوله ، وكذلك كان معاذ معلم الخير ، وكان مطيعا لله ورسوله

ENGLISH:

"Al-Ashja'ee narrated that Ibn Mas'ood said: "Verily, Mu'adh was an Ummah (nation), qanit (obedient) and a hanif (monotheist)". I thought to myself: Abu Abdul-Rahman (Ibn Mas'ood) must have made a mistake, because Allah said: "Verily, Ibrahim was an Ummah, (qanit and a hanif)!" [An-Nahl; 120]. Then he said: "Do you know what Ummah (nation) and what Qanit (obedient) refer to?" I said: "Allahu A'lam!" He said: "The ummah is the person who teaches others (goodness) and the qanit is the one who obeys Allah and His Messengers, and so was Mu'adh : a teacher of goodness and obedient to Allah and His messenger".

["Tafsir Ibn Katheer", 4/612].

"Love for Ali and Uthman do not combine"

Ad-Dhahabi writes:

يقول سفيان الثوري : لا يجتمع حب علي وعثمان إلا في قلوب نبلاء الرجال

ENGLISH:

Sufyan At-Thawri said: "The love for Alee and Uthmaan do not combine, except in the hearts of the noble men".

NEDERLANDS:

Sufyan zei: "De liefde voor Ali en Uthman komen niet samen, behalve in de harten der nobelen onder de mannen".

"Do not compare us to them"

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd writes:

وقد كان عبد الله بن المبارك إذا ذكر أخلاق من سلف ينشد:
لا تعرضن بذكرنا مع ذكرهم ليس الصحيح إذا مشى كالمقعد

ENGLISH:

"Abdullaah Ibn Mubarak, (may Allah be pleased with him), used to say, in poetry if the manners of the salaf were mentioned: "Do not compare us to them, for the sound person who walks, is not the same as the crippled one".

"Abdullah Ibn Mubarak zou de volgende lijnen van poëzie oplezen, als de manieren van de salaf werden genoemd: "Vergelijk ons niet met hun, want degene die rechtop liep is niet gelijk aan de invalide".

"Is she then not your mother?"

Imam Al-Asbahaani writes in "Al-Hujjah":

أخبرنا أبو المظفر السمعاني ، حدثنا أبو الحسن البزاز ، حدثنا عيسى بن علي الوزير قال :
قرئ على يحيى بن صاعد ، حدثكم يوسف بن موسى القطان ، حدثنا أبو معاوية ، حدثنا هشام عن أبيه عن عائشة رضى الله عنها أنها ذكرت عند رجل فسبها ، فقيل له : أليست أمك ؟ قال : ما هي بأم فبلغها ذلك فقالت : صدق إنما أنا أم المؤمنين ، وأما الكافرين فلست لهم بأم

ENGLISH:

[ ... ] Hishaam narrated on the authority of his father, that Aishah was mentioned in the presence of a man and he reviled her, upon which it was said to him: "Is she then not your mother?" He said: "She is not my mother!" When news of this incident reached Aishah, radiallahuanha, she said: "He has spoken the truth! Indeed, I'm the mother of believers and not the mother of disbelievers".

"By Allah, we will crowd around him!"

Abu Muslim al-Khawlaani said:

أيظن أصحاب محمد أن يستأثروا به دوننا ، كلا والله ! لنزاحمنهم عليه زحاماً حتى يعلموا أنهم قد خلَّفوا وراءهم رجالاً.  وقد كان يقول كلمته هذه عندما كان يقوم الليل فإذا تعبت قدماه ضربها بيديه وقال ذلك

ENGLISH:

"Did the companions of Muhammad think that they would be the only ones who will be close to him? No, by Allah, we will crowd around him with them so that they will know that there were men (of ambition and will power) who succeeded them!" He used to say this whenever he spent the night in prayer and worship. If his feet grew tired he would strike them with his hand and say that".

“Make a wish”

Ibn Al-Jawzi Al-Hanbali writes:

في دار من دور المدينة المباركة جلس عمر  إلى جماعة من أصحابه فقال لهم: تمنوا ؛ فقال أحدهم: أتمنى لو أن هذه الدار مملوءةٌ ذهباً أنفقه في سبيل الله. ثم قال عمر: تمنوا، فقال رجل آخر: أتمنى لو أنها مملوءة لؤلؤاً وزبرجداً وجوهراً أنفقه في سبيل الله. ثم قال: تمنوا، فقالوا: ما ندري ما نقول يا أمير المؤمنين؟ فقال عمر  : لكني أتمنى أن يكون ملء هذا البيت رجالا مثل أبي عبيدة بنِ الجراح

ENGLISH:

In one of the houses of Madinah, ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allaah be pleased with him, was sitting with a group of his companions. He asked them: “Make a wish”, one of them said, “I wish to have as much gold as would fill this whole house, so that I could spend it in Jihaad”; then again ‘Umar asked: “Make a wish”, another man said, “I wished that this house was full of jewels and pearls so that I could spend it all in Jihaad and charity for the sake of Allaah”; ‘Umar asked for the third time: “Make a wish”, his companions said: “We don’t know what to say, O leader of the believers”; Thereupon ‘Umar said, “I wish that this house was full of men like Abu ‘Ubaydah Ibn Al-Jarraah!"

"Who is the best sahabi?"

Imam Adh-Dhahabi says:

عيسى بن مريم نبي وصحابي فإنه رأى النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ، وسلّم عليه فهو آخر الصحابة موتا

ENGLISH:

"Jesus, the son of Mary, is a Prophet and a companion, because he saw the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him during the night journey) and he greeted him, so he will be the final sahabi to die".

NEDERLANDS:

"Jezus de zoon van Maria, is een Profeet en een metgezel want hij zag Profeet Muhammad (tijdens de hemelreis) en hij groette hem, dus hij is de laatste sahabi die zal sterven".

"Ibn Mas'ud was one those pools"

Abu Khaithama narrated that Mashruq said:

جالست أصحاب رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فكانوا كالاخاذ يروي الراكب والاخاذ يروي الراكبين والاخاذ يروي العشرة والاخاذ لو نزل به أهل الأرض لأصدرهم وإن عبد الله من تلك الاخاذ

ENGLISH:

"I found some of the Companions of Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, like pools which water one person, some like pools which water two, and some such that if all people had come to it, it would satisfy them. 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud was one those pools."

NEDERLANDS:

"Ik heb de metgezellen van de sahaba vergezelt en ieder van hun was zoals een poel water die de dorst van een reiziger lest, en een poel die de dorst van twee reizigers lest en een poel die de dorst van tien mensen lest en sommige zouden de dorst van de hele mensheiden kunnen lessen! En Abdullah was een van deze poelen".

"If a goat had died at the Euphrates"

Umar Ibn Al-Khattab said:

لو مات جدي بطف الفرات لخشيت أن يحاسب اللّه به عمر

ENGLISH:

"If a goat had died with the driftage of the Euphrates, I would worry that Omar might be held accountable for it".

NEDERLANDS:

"Als een bok bij de Eufraat (in Iraq) doodgaat, dan vrees ik dat Allaah daar Umar ter verantwoording voor zal roepen!"

["At-Tabaqaat", 3/305].

"De levenden zijn niet veilig voor fitnah"

Ibn Masud zegt:

"Als je iemand wilt volgen, volgt dan de heengaanden, want de levenden zijn niet veilig voor fitnah! Zij waren de Sahaba van Muhammad, de besten van deze Ummah".

{"Ighathat al-Lahfan", 1/159}.

Wie was beter?

Abdullaah Ibn Mobarak werd gevraagd: "Wie was beter, Mu’aawiyah of Umar Ibn Abdul Aziez?" Dus hij antwoordde:

“De zand die in de neusgaten van Mu’aawiyah in de aanwezigheid van de Boodschapper van Allaah terecht kwam was beter dan Umar Ibn Abdul Aziez!”
