"O little mother of ancient days"

Sa’dee Al-Shirazee wrote in his "Gulistan":

پيرزنى موى شيرى سيه كرده بود گفتم اى مامك ديرينه روز موى به تلبيس سيه
كرده گير راست نخواهد شد اين پشت كوز



ENGLISH:

"An old hag had dyed her hair black.
I said to her: "O little mother of ancient days,
Thou hast cunningly dyed thy hair but consider
That thy bent back will never be straight".

["Gulistane Sa'dee", 227].

"... it refers to gray hair"

"Did not We grant you a life long enough for him who reflected to reflect therein? And there came to you the warner". [35:37].

It's narrated in "Tafsir Bahr Al-Muheet" regarding that Ayah:

وقيل : النذير : الشيب ، قاله ابن عباس
ENGLISH:

"And it was said: "the warner", refers to gray hair. This was the saying of Ibn Abbaas".

NEDERLANDS:

"En er werd gezegd: "een waarschuwer", verwijst naar grijs haar. Dat was de uitleg van Ibn Abbaas".

"I see that the death is looking for me"

Ibn Abdul-Barr writes:

رأى إياس بن قتادة شعرةً بيضاء في لحيته، فقال: أرى الموت يطلبني



ENGLISH:

Iyaas bin Qataadah saw white hair in his beard and he said: "I see that the death is looking for me".

NEDERLANDS:

Iyaas bin Qataadah zag wit haar in zijn baard, en hij zei: "Ik zie dat de dood naar mij zoekende is".

"Who remains?! Who remains?!"





"Why do you carry a walking stick?"

An-Nawawee wrote:

قيل للشافعي : ما لك تدمن إمساك العصا ولست بضعيف؟ قال: لأذكر أني مسافر، يعني: في الدنيا



ENGLISH:

It was said to Al-Shafi'ee: "Why do you carry a walking stick while you're not weak?" He said: "To remind myself that I'm only a traveler", meaning in this world ...".

NEDERLANDS:

Tegen Imam Al-Shafi'ee werd gezegd: "Waarom loopt u altijd met een wandelstok terwijl u niet zwak bent?" Hij zei: "Om mezelf te herineren dat ik slechts een musaafir (reiziger) ben", doelend op dit leven ...".

"When will a believer find comfort?"

It has been narrated in the "Tabaqat Al-Hanabilah":

قال محمد بن حسنويه: حضرت أبا عبد الله أحمد بن حنبل وجاءه رجل من أهل خراسان فقال: يا أبا عبد الله قصدتك من خراسان أسألك عن مسألة قال له سل قال: متى يجد العبد طعم الراحة قال: عند أول قدم يضعها في الجنة



ENGLISH:

Ibn Hasnawiyah narrated: "... I was in the presence of Imam Ahmad when a man from the people of Khurassaan came to him and said: "O Abu Abdullaah, I came to you from Khurassan because I wanted to ask you about a certain issue". Imam Ahmad said: "Ask". He said: "When will a believer find the taste of comfort?" Imam Ahmad said: "With the first step he takes into the Garden (Paradise) ...".

NEDERLANDS:

"... Ik was in de aanwezigheid van Imam Ahmad toen een man van Ahle-Khurasan naar hem toekwam en zei: "O Abu Abdullaah, ik ben vanuit Khurrassan naar u toe gekomen omdat ik u over een kwestie wil vragen". Imam Ahmad zei: "Vraag". Hij zei: "Wanneer zal een gelovige rust proeven?" Imam Ahmad zei: "Met zijn eerste stap in het Paradijs ...".

"Innovations have appeared!"

Qutaybah Ibn Sa’eed said:

مات الثوري ومات الورع ، ومات الشافعي وماتت السنن ، ويموت أحمد بن حنبل وتظهر البدع



ENGLISH:

"Ath-Thawree has died and piety has died (along with him)! Ash-Shaafi’ee has died and the Sunnan died (with him)! Ahmad Ibn Hanbal died and innovations have appeared!"

NEDERLANDS:

"Ath-Thawri stierf en vroomheid stierf met hem! Ash-Shafi'ee stierf en de Sunan stierven met hem! Ahmad Ibn Hanbal stierf en de innovaties kwamen weer tevoorschijn".
