"I hate that people walk behind me"

Abdur-Rahman Ibn Yazid said:

ألا تقعد في المسجد فيجمع إليك وتسأل ونجلس معك فإنه يسأل من هو دونك قال فقال علقمة: إني أكره أن يوطأ عقبي يقال هذا علقمة هذا علقمة

ENGLISH:

"It was once said to 'Alqamah: 'Won't you sit in the masjid so that the people may gather around you and ask you questions and so that we may sit with you? For indeed, they ask individuals that are lower than you (in knowledge).' So 'Alqamah said: 'Indeed, I hate that people walk behind me saying: This is 'Alqamah! This is 'Alqamah!"

NEDERLANDS:

"Er werd tegen Alqamah gezegd: "Zou u niet in de moskee willen zitten zodat mensen om u heen kunnen zitten en aan u vragen kunnen stellen en in uw gezelschap kunnen zitten? Zij vragen mensen die minder (kennis hebben) dan u". Dus Alqamah zei: "Waarlijk, ik haat het als mensen achter mij lopen, zeggende: "Dat is Alqamah! Dat is Alqamah!"

"Someone who wants to kill his own friend?"

Al-Fazari has narrated:

لما أراد الله تعالى قبض إبراهيم عليه السلام هبط إليه ملك الموت فقال له إبراهيم رأيت خليلا يقبض روح خليله قال فعرج ملك الموت إلى ربه ثم عاد إليه فقال له يا إبراهيم ورأيت خليلا يكره لقاء خليله

ENGLISH:

"When Allaah decided to take the sould of Ibraheem, He sent the Angel of Death to him. Ibraheem said to the Angel of Death: "Do you know someone who wants to kill his own friend?" The Angel of Death returned to Allaah. He then came back and said: "O Ibraheem, and do you know a friend who does not want to meet his friend?"

NEDERLANDS:

"Toen Allaah de ziel van Ibrahim (vrede zij met hem) wou wegnemen stuurde Hij de Engel des Doods (Malikul Mawt) naar hem toe. Ibrahim zei tegen de Engel des Doods: "Ken jij iemand die de ziel van zijn eigen vriend wil nemen?" De Engel des Doods ging terug naar Allaah. Hij keerde terug en zei: "Oh Ibrahim! En ken jij een vriend die niet zijn eigen vriend wilt ontmoeten?"

"You are ruined and ruining others!"

Abu Abdur-Rahman said:

أن عليا عليه السلام مر بقاص فقال أتعرف الناسخ من المنسوخ؟ قال: لا، قال: هلكت وأهلكت

ENGLISH:

"Once ‘Alee passed by a man who was narrating hadeeth, so he said to him: ‘Do you know that which abrogates from that which is abrogated?’ The man said: ‘No.’ So he said: ‘You are ruined and ruining others!"

NEDERLANDS:

"Op een dag liep Ali langs een man die ahaadith aan het overleveren was, dus hij vroeg aan hem: "Kan jij de naasikh (geabrogerend) van de mansoekh (geabrogeerde) onderscheiden?" Hij zei: "Nee". Hij zei: "Jij bent vernietigd en vernietigt anderen!"

["Kitab Al-Ilm", 130].

"Even if you have to write it on a wall"

Ash-Sha'bi said:

إذا سمعت شيئا فاكتبه ولو في الحائط

ENGLISH:

“If you hear anything, then write it down, even if you have to write it on a wall.”

NEDERLANDS:

"Schrijf al hetgeen jij hoort op, al is het op een muur!"

["Kitab Al-Ilm", 146].

"That is more dear to me"

Ibrahiem bin Habib said that his father said to him:

يا بني إيت الفقهاء والعلماء وتعلم منهم، وخذ من أدبهم وأخلاقهم وهديهم؛ فإن ذاك أحب إلي من كثير من الحديث

ENGLISH:

"O my son, you are going amongst the fuqahaa and the 'Ulamaa' and your learning from them, take from their adab, character and their guidance. That is more dear to me than that you (take) much from (knowledge) and the hadeeth."

NEDERLANDS:

"Yaa bunayya (Oh mijn zoon)! Ga naar de fuqaha en ulamaa en leer van hun. Neem van hun adab en akhlaaq (goede manieren) en hidayah (rechtschapenheid)! Voorzeker, dat is mij geliefder dan dat jij veel ahaadith leert".

["Al-Jaami' Al-Akhlaq Al-Rawi", 1/80].

"Seventy chapters of knowledge"

Some of the salaf would say to their children:

يا بني لأن تتعلم بابًا من الأدب أحب إليَّ من أن تتعلم سبعين بابًا من أبواب العلم

ENGLISH:

"Yaa bunayyi (Oh my son), For you to learn a chapter from al-Adab (manners) is more beloved to me then that you learn seventy chapters from the chapters of knowledge."

NEDERLANDS:

"Yaa bunayya (oh mijn zoon)! Als jij één hoofdstuk uit Al-Adab (manieren) leert, zou dat mij geliefder zijn dan dat jij 70 hoofdstukken uit Al-Ilm (kennis) leert".

["Adab Al-Imla wa'l-Istimla", 11].

"If he saw that someone spoke"

Ahmad Bin San'an Al-Qattan said:

كان عبدالرحمن بن مهدي لا يتحدث في مجلسه، ولا يبرى فيه قلم، ولا يبتسم فيه أحد، فإن تحدث أو بري قلم، صاح، ولبس نعليه، ودخل. وكان وكيع أيضا في مجلسه كأنهم في صلاة، فإن أنكر من أمرهم شيئا انتعل ودخل

ENGLISH:

“Nobody in the class of Abd ar-Rahman bin Mahdi would even speak, sharpen a pen, or smile. If he saw that someone spoke or sharpened a pen, he would get up, put on his shoes, and go home. Also, Waki’ (rahimahullah) and his students were as if they were in prayer during their classes, and if something happened in the class that annoyed him, he would put on his shoes and go home”

NEDERLANDS:

"Niemand zou in het gezelschap van Abdur-Rahman Bin Mahdi spreken, potlood slijpen of glimlachen. Als iemand sprak of zijn potlood ging slijpen zou hij zijn schoenen pakken en naar huis gaan. En ook Waki' (en zijn studenten) zouden in hun bijeenkomsten zijn alsof zij in het gebed staan. Als iets in de klas plaatsvond dat hem iriteerde dan zou hij zijn schoenen pakken en naar huis gaan".
