There is a vast ocean of knowledge that can be achieved from the life of Imam Ali, several hundred books have been written the best one being his own Nahjul Balagha.
This particular statement is very common in many of his books, for reference Ghurar al hikam is best.
This statement is attributed to Imam Ali, but I could not find the references myself. I hope someone else can.
