"I hate that people walk behind me"

Abdur-Rahman Ibn Yazid said:

ألا تقعد في المسجد فيجمع إليك وتسأل ونجلس معك فإنه يسأل من هو دونك قال فقال علقمة: إني أكره أن يوطأ عقبي يقال هذا علقمة هذا علقمة

ENGLISH:

"It was once said to 'Alqamah: 'Won't you sit in the masjid so that the people may gather around you and ask you questions and so that we may sit with you? For indeed, they ask individuals that are lower than you (in knowledge).' So 'Alqamah said: 'Indeed, I hate that people walk behind me saying: This is 'Alqamah! This is 'Alqamah!"

NEDERLANDS:

"Er werd tegen Alqamah gezegd: "Zou u niet in de moskee willen zitten zodat mensen om u heen kunnen zitten en aan u vragen kunnen stellen en in uw gezelschap kunnen zitten? Zij vragen mensen die minder (kennis hebben) dan u". Dus Alqamah zei: "Waarlijk, ik haat het als mensen achter mij lopen, zeggende: "Dat is Alqamah! Dat is Alqamah!"

"Someone who wants to kill his own friend?"

Al-Fazari has narrated:

لما أراد الله تعالى قبض إبراهيم عليه السلام هبط إليه ملك الموت فقال له إبراهيم رأيت خليلا يقبض روح خليله قال فعرج ملك الموت إلى ربه ثم عاد إليه فقال له يا إبراهيم ورأيت خليلا يكره لقاء خليله

ENGLISH:

"When Allaah decided to take the sould of Ibraheem, He sent the Angel of Death to him. Ibraheem said to the Angel of Death: "Do you know someone who wants to kill his own friend?" The Angel of Death returned to Allaah. He then came back and said: "O Ibraheem, and do you know a friend who does not want to meet his friend?"

NEDERLANDS:

"Toen Allaah de ziel van Ibrahim (vrede zij met hem) wou wegnemen stuurde Hij de Engel des Doods (Malikul Mawt) naar hem toe. Ibrahim zei tegen de Engel des Doods: "Ken jij iemand die de ziel van zijn eigen vriend wil nemen?" De Engel des Doods ging terug naar Allaah. Hij keerde terug en zei: "Oh Ibrahim! En ken jij een vriend die niet zijn eigen vriend wilt ontmoeten?"

"You are ruined and ruining others!"

Abu Abdur-Rahman said:

أن عليا عليه السلام مر بقاص فقال أتعرف الناسخ من المنسوخ؟ قال: لا، قال: هلكت وأهلكت

ENGLISH:

"Once ‘Alee passed by a man who was narrating hadeeth, so he said to him: ‘Do you know that which abrogates from that which is abrogated?’ The man said: ‘No.’ So he said: ‘You are ruined and ruining others!"

NEDERLANDS:

"Op een dag liep Ali langs een man die ahaadith aan het overleveren was, dus hij vroeg aan hem: "Kan jij de naasikh (geabrogerend) van de mansoekh (geabrogeerde) onderscheiden?" Hij zei: "Nee". Hij zei: "Jij bent vernietigd en vernietigt anderen!"

["Kitab Al-Ilm", 130].

"Even if you have to write it on a wall"

Ash-Sha'bi said:

إذا سمعت شيئا فاكتبه ولو في الحائط

ENGLISH:

“If you hear anything, then write it down, even if you have to write it on a wall.”

NEDERLANDS:

"Schrijf al hetgeen jij hoort op, al is het op een muur!"

"That is more dear to me"

Ibrahiem bin Habib said that his father said to him:

يا بني إيت الفقهاء والعلماء وتعلم منهم، وخذ من أدبهم وأخلاقهم وهديهم؛ فإن ذاك أحب إلي من كثير من الحديث

ENGLISH:

"O my son, you are going amongst the fuqahaa and the 'Ulamaa' and your learning from them, take from their adab, character and their guidance. That is more dear to me than that you (take) much from (knowledge) and the hadeeth."

NEDERLANDS:

"Yaa bunayya (Oh mijn zoon)! Ga naar de fuqaha en ulamaa en leer van hun. Neem van hun adab en akhlaaq (goede manieren) en hidayah (rechtschapenheid)! Voorzeker, dat is mij geliefder dan dat jij veel ahaadith leert".

["Al-Jaami' Al-Akhlaq Al-Rawi", 1/80].

"Seventy chapters of knowledge"

Some of the salaf would say to their children:

يا بني لأن تتعلم بابًا من الأدب أحب إليَّ من أن تتعلم سبعين بابًا من أبواب العلم

ENGLISH:

"Yaa bunayyi (Oh my son), For you to learn a chapter from al-Adab (manners) is more beloved to me then that you learn seventy chapters from the chapters of knowledge."

NEDERLANDS:

"Yaa bunayya (oh mijn zoon)! Als jij één hoofdstuk uit Al-Adab (manieren) leert, zou dat mij geliefder zijn dan dat jij 70 hoofdstukken uit Al-Ilm (kennis) leert".

["Adab Al-Imla wa'l-Istimla", 11].

"If he saw that someone spoke"

Ahmad Bin San'an Al-Qattan said:

كان عبدالرحمن بن مهدي لا يتحدث في مجلسه، ولا يبرى فيه قلم، ولا يبتسم فيه أحد، فإن تحدث أو بري قلم، صاح، ولبس نعليه، ودخل. وكان وكيع أيضا في مجلسه كأنهم في صلاة، فإن أنكر من أمرهم شيئا انتعل ودخل

ENGLISH:

“Nobody in the class of Abd ar-Rahman bin Mahdi would even speak, sharpen a pen, or smile. If he saw that someone spoke or sharpened a pen, he would get up, put on his shoes, and go home. Also, Waki’ (rahimahullah) and his students were as if they were in prayer during their classes, and if something happened in the class that annoyed him, he would put on his shoes and go home”

"Niemand zou in het gezelschap van Abdur-Rahman Bin Mahdi spreken, potlood slijpen of glimlachen. Als iemand sprak of zijn potlood ging slijpen zou hij zijn schoenen pakken en naar huis gaan. "And learn from his manners"

Imam Malik has said:

كانت أمي تعممني وتقول: اذهب إلى ربيعة فتعلم من أدبه قبل علمه

ENGLISH:

"My mother would put my 'Amaamah (turban) on my head and would say to me: "Go to Rabee’ah and learn from his manners before you learn knowledge".

NEDERLANDS:

"Mijn moeder zou mijn 'Amaamah (tulband) op mijn hoofd zetten en tegen mij zeggen: "Ga naar Rabee'ah  en leer van zijn Adab voordat je van zijn Ilm leert".

"You seek knowledge and laugh?"

Abdur-Rahman Ibn Umar said:

وعن عبدالرحمن بن عمر قال: ضحك رجل في مجلس عبدالرحمن بن مهدي فقال: من ضحك؟ فأشاروا إلى رجل، فقال تطلب العلم وأنت تضحك؟! لاحدثتكم شهرا

ENGLISH:

"A man laughed in the class of ‘Abdir-Rahmaan bin Mahdee, and he asked: "Who laughed?" Everyone pointed to the man, and he scolded him: "You seek knowledge and laugh? I will not teach any of you for a month!"

NEDERLANDS:

"Een man lachte in het gezelschap van Abdir-Rahman Bin Mahdi. Hij vroeg: "Wie lachte?" Iedereen wees een man aan. Hij zei tegen hem: "Jij zoekt kennis en je lacht?! Ik zal jullie niets meer leren voor een maand!"

"And if they had followed the Knowledge"

Ibn Al-Qaasim said:

فقال ابن القاسم: سمعت مالكا يقول: إن أقواما ابتغوا العبادة، وأضاعوا العلم، فخرجوا على أمة محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم بأسيافهم، ولو ابتغوا العلم لحجزهم عن ذلك

ENGLISH:

"I heard Maalik say, 'Indeed there are a people who desire worship but squander the Knowledge (being deprived of it) so they revolt against the Ummah of Muhammad (salallaahu'alayheewasallam) with their swords. And if they had followed the Knowledge, then it would have prevented them from doing that."

NEDERLANDS:

"Ik hoorde Malik zeggen: "Sommigen gingen achter aanbidding aan en lieten het vergaren van kennis achterwege, toen keerden zij hun zwaarden tegen de Ummah van Muhammad! Als zij kennis hadden gezocht, dan zou dat hun daarvan hebben weerhouden".

"A knowledgeable person who is pleased"

Ibn Ataa' Allaah said:

أصل كل معصية وغفلة وشهوة الرضا عن النفس وأصل كل طاعة ويقظة وعفة عدم الرضا منك عنها   ولأن تصاحب جاهلا لا يرضى عن نفسه خير لك من أن تصاحب عالما يرضى عن نفسه. فأي علم لعالم يرضى عن نفسه، وأي جهل لجاهل لا يرضى عن نفسه

ENGLISH:

"The root of every disobedience, forgetfulness, and desire is contentment with the self, while the root of every obedience, vigilance, and continence is your dissatisfaction with it. That you accompany an ignorant who is not pleased with his self is better for you than to accompany a knowledgeable person who is pleased with his self. And what ignorance is that of one who is dissatisfied with himself? And what knowledge is that of one who is satisfied with himself?"

NEDERLANDS:

"De bron van elke ongehoorzaamheid, vergeetachtigheid en begeerte is het trots zijn op jezelf. En de bron van alle gehoorzaamheid, waakzaamheid en continentie is daarentegen de ontevredenheid over jezelf. "He is better than me"

Bakr Bin Abdillah Al-Muzani said:

إذا رأيت من هو أكبر منك فقل:هذا سبقني بالإيمان والعمل الصالح فهو خير مني  وإذا رأيت من هو أصغر منك فقل:سبقته إلى الذنوب والمعاصي فهو خير مني  وإذا رأيت إخوانك يكرمونك ويعظمونك فقل: هذا من فضل الله علىّ لا أستحقه  وإذا رأيت منهم تقصيراً فقل:هذا ذنب أحدثته

ENGLISH:

"If you see someone older than you then respect him (or her), saying to yourself: "He (or she) has beaten me to Islaam, Eemaan and righteous actions, he (or she) is better than me." And if you see someone younger than you (lower the wing of mercy to him) saying to yourself: "I have beaten him in sins, he is better than me."  And if you see your brothers (or sisters) honoring and praising you then say: "That is from the grace of Allaah upon me, but I do not deserve it."  If you see that they belittle you then say: "This happened as a consequence of a previous sin."

NEDERLANDS:

“Als je iemand tegenkomt die ouder is dan jij, zeg dan tegen jezelf: “Hij heeft mij ingehaald met zijn Imaan en goede daden! Hij is beter dan ik". En als je iemand tegenkomt die jonger is dan jou, zeg dan tegen jezelf: “Ik heb hem ingehaald met mijn zonden en overtredingen! Hij is beter dan ik." En als je ziet dat jouw broeders (of zusters) jou eren en prijzen, zeg dan: “Dit is een zegen van Allah op mij, maar ik verdien het niet”. En als je ziet dat zij jou kleineren, zeg: “Dit is het gevolg van mijn voorgaande zonde”.

"The example of the dunya"

Wahb Bin Munbih said:

مثل الدنيا والآخرة كمثل رجل له ضرتان إن أرضى إحداهما أسخط الأخرى

ENGLISH:

"The example of the dunya (worldly life) and hereafter is like the example of a man who has two wives. If he pleases one of them, the other one will be displeased".

NEDERLANDS:

"Het voorbeeld van de wereldse leven en het hiernamaals is zoals het voorbeeld van een man die twee vrouwen heeft. Als hij de een tevreden stelt, dan is de ander ontevreden".

"I'm not in need of it"

Isma'iel Ibn Khalid said:

مر إبليس بعيسى بن مريم وهو متوسد حجرا فقال له : يا عيسى قد رضيت من الدنيا بهذا الحجر ؟ قال : فأخذ من تحت رأسه فقذف به إليه فقال : هذا لك مع الدنيا لا حاجة لي فيه

ENGLISH:

"The devil walked past Jesus, the son of Mary, while his head was resting on a rock. The devil said: "O Jesus, are you satisfied with just one rock of this dunya?" He removed the rock from beneath his head and threw it at him, saying: "This is for you, along with the dunya! I'm not in need of it".

NEDERLANDS:

"De duivel liep langs Jezus de zoon van Maria terwijl hij zijn hoofd op een steen legde, en zei: "O Jezus, bent u tevreden met slechts een steen van deze dunya?" Hij haalde de steen van onder zijn hoofd en gooide het naar hem toe, zeggende: "Dat is voor jou met de dunya! Ik heb er niks aan".

"Refuse the love of this dunya"

Ibrahim Ibn Adham said:

أرفض ياأخي حب الدنيا فإن حب الدنيا يعمي ويصم

ENGLISH:

"O my brother! Refuse the love of this dunya (wordly life), because it blinds and deafens (the people)".

NEDERLANDS:

"Oh mijn broeder! Weiger de liefde voor de dunya, want het maakt (mensen) blind en doof".

"By Allaah, you will lose both!"

Al-Kathir Bin Ziyaad said:

بيعوا دنياكم بآخرتكم تربحونها والله جميعا ولا تبيعوا آخرتكم بدنياكم فتخسرونهما والله جميعا

ENGLISH:

"Sacrifice (or sell) your wordly life for the sake of the hereafter and by Allaah (wallaahi), you will attain both! But do not sacrifice the hereafter for the sake of this wordly, for by Allaah (wallaahi), you will lose both!"

NEDERLANDS:

"Verkoop jullie wereldse leven in ruil voor het hiernamaals en bij Allaah (wallaahi) jullie zullen beiden verkrijgen, en verkoop het hiernamaals niet voor de dunya want bij Allaah(wallaahi) jullie zullen beiden verliezen!"

"The dunya is cursed"

Abu Darda said:

الدنيا ملعونة ملعون ما فيها إلا ذكر الله وما أوى إليه

ENGLISH:

“This world is cursed, everything in it is cursed, except the remembrance of Allah and what leads to it".

NEDERLANDS:

"Deze wereld is vervloekt! Vervloekt is alles dat op haar is behalve de gedenking van Allah en hetgeen ernaartoe leidt".

"Wine is a caller to every sin"

Malik Ibn Dinar said:

حب الدنيا رأس كل خطيئة والنساء حبالة الشيطان والخمر داعية كل شر

ENGLISH:

"Love of this world is the head of every mistake (i.e. the main reason behind mistakes), women are the traps of the shaytan, and wine is a caller to every sin!"

NEDERLANDS:

"Liefde voor de wereld is het hoofd van elke fout (i.e. de hoofdreden achter fouten), vrouwen zijn de valkuil van de Shaytan, en wijn is een oproeper tot elke zonde".
