"Act upon your knowledge"

Yahya bin Ja'dah narrated that 'Alee said:

يا حملة العلم اعملوا به فإنما العالم من عمل وسيكون قوم يحملون العلم يباهي بعضهم بعضا حتى إن الرجل ليغضب على جليسه أن يجلس إلى غيره أولئك لا تصعد أعمالهم إلى السماء

ENGLISH:

"O carriers of knowledge! Act upon your knowledge, for indeed the one with knowledge is only he who acts on it. There will come a people who will carry knowledge, yet compete with one another to the point that a man will become angry at one of his students for sitting in another person's I gathering. These are the people whose deeds will not be raised up to heaven."

NEDERLANDS:

"O bezitters van kennis, handel naar jullie kennis. Waarlijk de geleerde is degene die naar zijn kennis handelt. Er zal een volk komen die kennis zal bezitten en ze zullen onderling opscheppen [over hun kennis], totdat zelfs een persoon boos wordt op zijn metgezel wanneer hij met een ander zou zitten [om kennis van hem te nemen]. De daden van deze mensen zullen niet stijgen naar de hemel".

"The knowledge of a believer"

'Abdu Allaah ben Al-Mu'taz said:

علم المنافق في قوله وعلم المؤمن في عمله

ENGLISH:

"The knowledge of a hypocrite is in his speech, while the knowledge of a believer is in his actions."

NEDERLANDS:

"De kennis van de huigelaar (munafiq) presenteert zich in zijn woorden (qawl), en de kennis van de gelovige (mu'min) presenteert zich in zijn daden (amal)".

["Iqtidaa-u al'ilmi al'amal", 38].

"Like a tree without fruit"

Khateeb Al-Baghdadi narrates:

قال عبد الله بن المعتز: علم بلا عمل كشجرة بلا ثمرة

ENGLISH:

"Abdullaah bin Al-Mu'taz said: "Knowledge without action is like a tree without fruit."

NEDERLANDS:

"Abdullaah bin Al-Mu'taz zei: "Kennis zonder daden is zoals een boom zonder fruit".

["Iqtidaa-u al'ilmi al'amal", 38].

"If you do not act upon what you know"

Maalik bin Dinaar said:

إني وجدت في بعض الحكمة لا خير لك أن تعلم ما لم تعلم ولم تعمل بما قد علمت فإن مثل ذلك مثل مثل رجل احتطب حطبا فحزم حزمة ذهب يحملها فعجز عنها فضم إليها أخرى

ENGLISH:

"I found it written in some of the wise sayings: 'There is no good in you knowing what you don't know when you do not act upon what you already know. The example of this is like that of a man who gathers firewood then ties it up in a bundle and begins to carry it on his back. But when he finds that he is not able to, (instead of taking some firewood out of the bundle) he puts more in it.'"

NEDERLANDS:

"Ik heb een deel van de wijsheid gevonden in: Er zit geen goede voor jou in kennis vergaren over een zaak waar jij geen kennis over bezit, terwijl jij nog niet hebt gehandeld naar de kennis die jij wel bezit. Dit is net als de man die een hoop hout heeft gehakt, en toen hij het wou optillen was het te zwaar voor hem en (in plaats van wat hout te verminderen) ging hij nog meer hout bij halen om te dragen".

"I used to learn about the evil"

Hudhayfah Ibn Al-Yamaan said:

إن أصحابي تعلموا الخير وأنا أتعلم الشر قيل وما يحملك على هذا قال إنه من تعلم مكان الشر يتقه

ENGLISH:

"My companions used to learn about the good, while I used to learn about the evil (from the Prophet)". It was said to him, "What made you do such a thing?" He said, "Whoever learns the place where evil is will avoid it".

NEDERLANDS:

"Mijn metgezellen zouden over het goede leren en ik zou over het slechte leren". Hij werd gevraagd: "Waarom ging u dat doen?" Hij zei: "Degene die weet waar het slechte plaatsvind, zal die plek vermijden".

["Kitaab-Al-‘Ilm", 74].

"Do not compare us to them"

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd writes:

وقد كان عبد الله بن المبارك إذا ذكر أخلاق من سلف ينشد:
لا تعرضن بذكرنا مع ذكرهم ليس الصحيح إذا مشى كالمقعد

ENGLISH:

"Abdullaah Ibn Mubarak, (may Allah be pleased with him), used to say, in poetry if the manners of the salaf were mentioned: "Do not compare us to them, for the sound person who walks, is not the same as the crippled one".

NEDERLANDS:

"Abdullah Ibn Mubarak zou de volgende lijnen van poëzie oplezen, als de manieren van de salaf werden genoemd: "Vergelijk ons niet met hun, want degene die rechtop liep is niet gelijk aan de invalide".

"Will you not write a book on zuhd?"

Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd writes:

وعن محمد بن الحسن الشيباني رحمه الله تعالى لما قيل له: ألا تصنف كتابا في الزهد؟ قال: قد صنفت كتاباً في البيوع يعنى:الزاهد من يتحرز عن الشبهات، والمكروهات، في التجارات، وكذلك في سائر المعاملات والحرف

ENGLISH:

"It was narrated that when it was said to Muhammad Ibn Hasan Al-Shaybani: "Will you not write a book on zuhd?" He replied: "I have written a book on transactions", meaning: The true acetic person is the one who is cautious from falling into the shubuhaat (matters of halaal and haraam which are unclear), and things which are disliked, whether in business or other transactions and professions".

NEDERLANDS:

"Er is overgeleverd dat tegen Muhammad Ibn Hassan Al-Shaybani Al-Hanafi werd gezegd: "Schrijft u dan geen boek over zuhd (ascisme)?" Hij zei: "Ik heb een boek over transacties al geschreven", betekenend: De ware zahid (asceet) is degene die oppast dat hij niet in shubuhaat valt (onduidelijke zaken in haram en halal), makruhaat (afkeuringswaardige zaken) in handel en andere beroepen".
