"They do not know what is in the message"

Iyyas Ibn Mu'awiyah said:

مثل الذين يقرؤون القرآن وهم لا يعلمون تفسيره كمثل قوم جاءهم كتاب من ملكهم ليلا وليس عندهم مصباح فتداخلتهم روعة لا يدرون ما في الكتاب ومثل الذي يعرف التفسير كمثل رجل جاءهم بمصباح فقرؤوا ما في الكتاب

ENGLISH:

“The example of a people who recite the Qur’an and do not know its explanation is like a group of people who have a written message from their king that comes to them during the night, and they do not have a lamp. Therefore, they do not know what is in the message. The example of one who knows tafseer is like a person who comes to them with a lamp and reads to them what is in the message.”

"De gelijkenis van degenen die de Qur'an lezen maar de tafseer ervan niet kennen is zoals een groep mensen die overnacht een boodschap (letterlijk "boek") van hun koning kregen, terwijl zij geen lamp bij zich hebben (om het te kunnen lezen). Zij hebben dus geen idee wat in die boodschap staat! De vergelijking van iemand die tafseer wel kent, is zoals een man die met een lamp naar hen toekwam en las wat er in stond".
