Wisdom of Luqman Hakim

Ibn Kathir writes in his Tafsir:

كان لقمان عبدًا حبشيا نجارا، فقال له مولاه: اذبح لنا هذه الشاة. فذبحها، فقال: أخْرجْ أطيب مُضغتين فيها. فأخرج اللسان والقلب، فمكث ما شاء الله ثم قال: اذبح لنا هذه الشاة. فذبحها، فقال: أخرج أخبث مضغتين فيها. فأخرج اللسان والقلب، فقال له مولاه: أمرتك أن تخرج أطيب مضغتين فيها فأخرجتهما، وأمرتك أن تخرج أخبث مضغتين فيها فأخرجتهما. فقال لقمان: إنه ليس من شيء أطيب منهما إذا طابا، ولا أخبث منهما إذا خَبُثا

ENGLISH:

"Luqman's master said to him, `Slaughter this sheep for us,' so he slaughtered it. [His master] said: `Bring the best two pieces from it,' so he brought out the tongue and the heart. Then time passed, as much as Allah willed, and [his master] said: `Slaughter this sheep for us,' so he slaughtered it. [His master] said, `Bring the worst two morsels from it,' so he brought out the tongue and the heart. His master said to him, `I told you to bring out the best two pieces, and you brought these, then I told you to bring out the worst two pieces, and you brought these!' Luqman said, `There is nothing better than these if they are good, and there is nothing worse than these if they are bad.''

"Luqman's meester zei tegen hem: "Slacht dit schaap voor ons", dus hij ging dat doen. Zijn meester zei: "Breng de beste stukken ervan naar ons toe (zodat wij het eten)", dus hij bracht de tong en het hart. Na een tijd zei zijn meester weer tegen hem: "Slacht dit schaap voor ons", dus hij ging het weer doen. Zijn meester zei weer tegen hem: "Breng de slechtste stukken ervan naar ons toe", dus weer bracht hij de tong en het hart. Zijn meester zei: "Toen ik u om de beste stukken vroeg bracht u dezen en toen ik u om de slechtste stukken vroeg bracht u ook dezen?" Luqman zei: "Er is niets beter dan deze twee als ze goed zijn, en er is niets slechter dan deze twee als ze slecht zijn".
