"What is a mujtahid mutlaq"

Zakariyah bin Yahya Al-Dharir said:

قلت لاحمد بن حنبل: كم يكفي الرجل من الحديث حتى يكون مفتيا ؟ يكفيه مئة ألف ؟ فقال: لا. إلى أن قال: فيكفيه خمس مئة ألف حديث ؟ قال: أرجو

ENGLISH:

"I said to Ahmad Ibn Hanbal: How many Hadīths are sufficient for a man to give a Fatwa? Is one hundred thousand sufficient for him? He said: No. He kept saying that, untul I reched: Five hundred thousand? He said: I hope so".

NEDERLANDS:

"Ik vroeg aan Ahmad ibn Hanbal: "Hoeveel hadith is voor de man genoeg zodat hij dan mufti is? Is 100.000 voor hem genoeg? Hij zei: "Nee", en hij bleef dat zeggen tot ik bij 500.000 kwam, en hij zei: "Ik hoop het".
