"I'll show you that they are only cows"

Allaan Al-Warraaq narrates:

رأيت العتابي يأكل خبزا على الطريق بباب الشام فقلت له :
ويحك أما تستحي ؟ فقال لي : أرأيت لو كنا في دار فيها بقر أكنت تحتشم أن تأكل وهي تراك ؟  فقلت : لا قال : فاصبر حتى أعلمك أنهم بقر ثم قام فوعظ وقص ودعا حتى كثر الزحام عليه ثم قال لهم : روي لنا من غير وجه أن من بلغ لسانه أرنبة أنفه لم يدخل النار قال : فما بقي منهم أحد إلا أخرج لسانه يوميء به نحو أرنبته ويقدره هل يبلغها  فلما تفرقوا قال لي العتابي : ألم أخبرك أنهم بقر

ENGLISH:

"I saw Al-'Itaabee eating bread in the pathway at Bab ash Sham, I said to him: 'Woe to you, do you have no shame?!'  He responded: 'If we were in a building full of cows, would you be ashamed of eating while they looked at you?'  I said; 'No.'  He said: 'Be patient while I show you that they are only cows.'  He stood up, delivered a sermon, told stories and supplicated until there was a big crowd around him, he then said:  'It was narrated to us with more than one chain of narration that whoever has a tongue that can reach the tip of his nose will not enter the Hellfire.'  There was no one in the crowd except that he was trying to see if his tongue would reach the tip of his nose.  When the crowd dispersed Al-'Itaabee said to me: 'Didn’t I tell you they were cows.'

NEDERLANDS:

"Ik zag Al-'Itaabee brood eten op straat bij een deur van Ash-Sham, dus ik zei tegen hem: "Wee jou! Heb je dan geen schaamte?" Hij zei tegen mij: "Als wij ons in een huis zouden bevinden die vol was met koeien, zou jij je dan schamen om in hun aanwezigheid te eten?" Ik zei: "Nee". Hij zei: "Wacht, ik ga bewijzen dat zij koeien zijn". Hij stond op, gaf een preek, vertelde verhalen en maakte du'a tot er een grote menigte zich om hem heen verzamelde. Hij zei: "Het is ons door verschillende ketens overgeleverd, dat degene wiens tong de top van zijn neus bereikt de hellevuur niet zal binnentreden". Er was niemand in de menigte die niet probeerde of zijn tong de top van zijn neus kon bereiken! Toen de menigte weer uit elkaar ging, zei Al-Itaabee tegen mij: "Zei ik je niet dat zij koeien waren?"
