"I am going to attack the elephant"

Ibn Al-Atheer wrote regarding the battle of Qadisiyah (636 AD):

قال عمرو بن معدي كرب‏:‏ إني حاملٌ على الفيل ومن حوله لفيل بإزائه فلا تدعوني أكثر من جزر جزور فإن تأخرتم عني فقدتم أبا ثور يعني نفسه وأين لكم مثل أبي ثور‏!‏ فحمل وضرب فيهم حتى ستره الغبار

ENGLISH:

"Amru bin Madi Karab then said: "I am going to attack the elephant (of a group of the Persian forces) and the people around it. Do not leave me for longer than the time it takes to slaughter a camel. If you come late, you will lose Abu Thawr! (meaning himself) And how would you find another man like Abu Thawr?!" So he charged, and started striking them, until he disappeared into a cloud of dust".

"Amru bin Madi Karab zei toen: "Ik val de olifant en degenen (perzen) rondom de olifant aan, maar blijf niet langer weg dan de tijd die nodig is om een kameel te slachten. Als jullie later aankomen, dan zullen jullie Abu Thawr verliezen!" Hij bedoelde hiermee zichzelf ."En waar zullen jullie een soortgelijke van Abu Thawr vinden?!" Toen viel hij aan, en begon hen te treffen totdat hij verdween in een stofwolk".
