"But the scholar is the doctor"

Sa'ieed bin Ya'qoob has narrated:

كتب إلي أحمد : بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم :من أحمد بن محمد إلى سعيد بن يعقوب أما بعد : فإن الدنيا داء والسلطان داء والعالم طبيب فإذا رأيت طبيب يجرالداء إلى نفسه فاحذره

ENGLISH:

Imam Ahmad wrote to me: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, from Ahmad to Sa'ieed bin Ya'qub: This world is like a sickness, and the Ruler is also sickness, but the scholar is the doctor. So if you see the doctor draw upon himself sickness, then be cautious of him".

Imam Ahmad schreef naar mij: "In de naam van Allah, de Erbarmer, de meest Barmhartige, van Ahmad bin Muhammad naar Sa’ieed bin Ya’qoeb, amma ba’d: De dunya (wereld) is een ziekte, en de sultan is een ziekte, maar de Alim (geleerde) is de dokter! Dus als je ziet dat een dokter ziektes naar zichzelf trekt, pas dan op voor hem!"
