"Its uglier than the magic Harut and Marut"

Malik Bin Dinar is reported to have said:

اتقوا السحارة التي تسحر قلوب العلماء وتلهيهم عن الله تعالى ( ويعني بها الدنيا ) وهي أسحر وأقبح من هاروت وماروت ، لأن ذاك يفرّق بين المرء  وزوجه وهي تفرّق بين العبد وربه

ENGLISH:

"Beware of the sorcerer who enchants the hearts of the scholars distracting them from Allah the Most High (i.e. the world). Its nature is uglier than the magic Harut and Marut came with, since their magic separated a man from his wife, whereas the world separates a man from his Lord".

NEDERLANDS:

"Pas op voor de magie die de harten van de geleerden scheidt van Allaah, de verhevene (i.e. de wereld). En haar magie is sterker dan de magie van Haroet en Maroet, want hun magie zou een man van zijn vrouw scheiden, terwijl de wereld een dienaar van zijn Heer scheidt".
