"... the glad tidings of bankruptcy"

Alee bin Khashram narrated:

قال علي بن خشرم : سمعت سفيان بن عيينة ، يسأل رجلا ما حرفتك ؟ قال : طلب الحديث ، قال : بشر أهلك بالإفلاس



ENGLISH:

"I heard Sufyan Ibn Uyaynah ask a man: "What is your occupation?" He replied: "I gather ahadith". Sufyan said: "Then give your family the glad tidings of bankruptcy".

NEDERLANDS:

"Ik hoorde Sufyan Ibn Uyaynah tegen een man zeggen: "Wat is jouw occupatie?" Hij zei: "Ik verzamel alhadith". Hij zei: "Geef je familie de blijde tijdingen van faillissement".

  1. I say: This is how difficult it was to study the religion back in those days. Knowledge is now widespread as was prophisized. We can get:

    6 complete Hadith books
    All the famous Tafasir
    Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali Fiqh
    Books of Fatawa and Seerah and Tareekh

    All on just 1CD!

    Imagine, just the Tafsir At-Tabari is 30 volumes! We can get all of this on just one CD. We can copy and paste an entire book in matter of seconds. This was imposible back in those days. Everything had to be handwritten, word for word. Ulama used to travel from one side of the world to the other to hear a single hadith!
