"Have you fought Rome?!"

Sufyaan Ibn al-Husayn said:

ذكرت رجلاً بسوء عند إياس بن معاوية، فنظر في وجهي، وقال أغزوت الروم؟ قلت: لا، قال: فالسند والهند والترك؟ قلت: لا، قال: أفتسلم منك الروم والسند والهند والترك، ولم يسلم منك أخوك المسلم؟! قال: فلم أعد بعدها

ENGLISH:

"I spoke ill of someone in the presence of Iyaas bin Mu'aawiyah who looked me straight in the face and said, "Have you fought Rome?" I said, 'No.' He said, 'Have you fought the Romans, the Sind, the Indians and the Turks?' I said, 'No.' He then said, "Will the Romans, the Sind, the Indians and the Turks be safe from your harm and your Muslim brother not be safe from your harm?" Sufyaan said, "From that day onward, I never spoke ill of anybody."

"Ik sprak slecht over een man in de gezelschap van Iyaas ibn Mu'aawiyah. Hij keek mij aan en vroeg: "Heb jij ooit Rome (of de Romeinen) aangevallen?" Ik zei: "Nee". Hij vroeg: "En Sindh, Hind of de Turken?" Ik zei: "Nee". Toen zei hij: "Rome, Sindh, Hind en de Turken werden gered van jou, maar jouw eigen moslimbroeder werd niet gered!" Sufyaan zei: "Hierna (roddelde) ik nooit meer."
