"I saw the handwriting of Abu 'Abdillah"

Al-Khatib al-Baghdaadi said:

رأيت بخط أبي عبد الله أحمد بن محمد بن حنبل في عدة أحاديث اسم النبي , ولم يكتب الصلاة عليه , وبلغني أنه كان يصلي على النبي نطقاً لا خطاً , وقد خالفه غيره من الأئمة المتقدمين في ذلك

ENGLISH:

"I saw the handwriting of Abu 'Abdillah Ahmad bin Hambal of many ahadith in which the Prophet was mentioned, and he would not write 'sall Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam' after his name. I was informed that he used to invoke peace and blessings upon the Prophet by his tongue, and not in writing."

"Ik zag in de handschriften van Ahmad Ibn Hanbal veel ahaadith waarin de Profeet werd genoemd, maar hij zou geen "Sal Allahu 'Alayhi wa Sallam" achter zijn naam schrijven. Mij werd verteld dat hij zegeningen over de Profeet met de mond zou zenden en niet schriftelijk en hierin hebben andere vroegere geleerden met hem van mening verschild".
