"If he abandons such practice, he is my brother"

Once, Abu-d Dardaa passed a group of people crowding around a man insulting and beating him, he said:

أرأيتم لو وجدتموه في قليب، ألم تكونوا مستخرجيه؟ قالوا: بلى، قال: فلا تسبوا أخاكم واحمدوا الله عز وجل الذي عافاكم، قالوا: أفلا نبغضه؟ قال: إنما أبغضوا عمله فإذا تركه فهو أخي

ENGLISH:

"What do you think you would do if he had fallen into a well?" asked Abu-d Dardaa. "Wouldn't you try to get him out?" "Certainly," they said. "Don't insult your brother and give praise to God Who has preserved you from falling into such a sin." "Don't you hate him?" they asked Abu-d Dardaa. He answered by saying: "I only detest what he had done and if he abandons such practice, he is my brother."

NEDERLANDS:

"Wanneer jullie deze kerel in een put zouden vinden, zouden jullie hem er dan uit redden?" Zij zeiden: "Ja". Abu Ad-Darda zei: "Berisp hem dan niet en prijs Allaah dat Hij jullie heeft beschermd tegen zijn zonde". Zij vroegen: "Haat u hem niet?" Abu Dardaa zei tegen hen: "Nee, ik haat zijn zonde en als hij die los laat dan is hij mijn broeder".
