"So I am an aide of the oppressors?"

Al-Marwadhi has narrated:

لَّما سجن أحمد بن حنبل جاء السجان فقال له يا أبا عبد الله الحديث الذي روي في الظلمة وأعوانهم صحيح ؟ قال الإمام أحمد : نعم قال السَّجَّان : فأنا من أعوان الظلمة ؟ قال الإمام أحمد فأعوان الظلمة من يأخذ شعرك ويغسل ثوبك ويصلح طعامك ويبيع ويشتري منك فأما انت فمن الظلمة أنفسهم

ENGLISH:

"When Ahmad bin Hambal was imprisoned, one of the prison guards came to him and asked him:  "O Abu 'Abdillah! The hadith that is narrated regarding the oppressors and those that aid them - is it authentic?"  He said: "Yes."  The prison guard then said: "So, I am considered to be an aide of the oppressors?"  Ahmad replied: "No. The aides of the oppressors are those that comb your hair, wash your clothes, prepare your meals, and buy and sell from you. As for you, you are one of the oppressors themselves."

"O Aba 'Abdillaah! De hadith die is overgeleverd aangaande de onderdrukkers en degene die hen helpen - is die authentiek?" Imam Ahmad antwoordde: "Na'am (Ja, het is authentiek)". De gevangenisbewaarder vroeg toen: "Dus ik behoor tot de helpers van de onderdrukkers?" Imam Ahmad antwoordde: "De helpers van de onderdrukkers zijn degene die jouw haren voor je knippen, jouw kleren voor je wassen, jouw maaltijden voor je voorbereiden, en zij die aan jou dingen verkopen en van jou dingen kopen. Wat jou betreft, jij bent zelf één van de onderdrukkers!!"
