"I was told that you bought a ring"

Umar Ibn Abdul Aziz was told that his son bought a ring for a thousand dirhams, he wrote to him:

بلغني أنّك اشتريت خاتمًا وفصّه بألف درهم، فإذا أتاك كتابي هذا فَبِعْ الخاتم، وأشبع به ألف بطن، واتّخذ خاتمًا بدرهمين، واجعل فصّه حديدًا صينيًا واكتُب عليه: رحِم الله امرءًا عرف قدره

ENGLISH:

"I was told that you bought a ring that costs a thousand dirhams. So when you receive this letter, sell the ring and fill a thousand stomachs (with food bought) with that money. Then buy a ring for two dirhams that has a core of iron and have the following words scripted on it, 'May Allah grant His Mercy to he who knows the limits of his own self.'

NEDERLANDS:

"Er is mij ter oren gekregen dat jij een ring ter waarde van 1.000 dirhams hebt gekocht. Als dit brief jou bereikt, verkoop dan de ring en vul 1.000 buiken (van de armen) met (eten van) dat geld! Koop dan een ring voor 2 dirhams waar de binnenkant ervan van metaal is en grafeer daarop de volgende woorden: "Moge Allaah genade hebben met degene die zijn grens kent".
