"Not knowing that there is a snake"

Shaykh Abu Ghudah wrote on the importans of isnad:

قال الإمام الشافعي رحمه الله تعالى: مثل الذي يطلب الحديث بلا إسناد، كمثل حاطب ليل، يحمل حزمة حطب وفيه أفعى وهو لا يدري وقال عبد الله بن المبارك مَثَلُ الذي يطلب أمر دينه بلا إسناد ، كَمَثَلِ الذي يرتقي السطح بلا سلَّم وقال الحافظ بقية بن الوليد الحمصي رحمه الله تعالى : ذاكرت حماد بن زيد بأحاديث ، فقال ما أجودها لو كان لها أجنحة ، يعنى إسناداً ويشير بقوله : لو كان لها أجنحة

ENGLISH:

"Imam Al-Shaf'ie says:“The example of the one who seeks Hadith without an Isnad is of a person who gathers wood in the night. He carries a bundle of sticks not knowing that there is a snake in it.” Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak said:"The one who seeks matters of his deen without an Isnad is similar to the one who climbs to the roof without a ladder.” And Baqiyya ibn al-Walid once related to Hammad ibn Zaid certain narrations that were void of Isnad. So Hammad said: “How excellent! If only they had wings.”, and he meant the isnad".

"Imam Al-Shafi'ie zei: "De gelijkenis van iemand die ahadith zoekt zonder isnad, is zoals de gelijkenis van een man die hout verzamelt in de nacht. Hij draagt een bundel van stokken, niet wetend dat er een slang in zit". Ibn Al-Mubarak zei: "Degene die de religieuze zaken zoekt zonder Isnad, is zoals degene die een dak wilt beklimmen zonder een ladder". En van Ibn Al-Walid is overgeleverd dat hij een aantal ahadith aan Hammad Ibn Zaid overleverde zonder isnad. Hammad zei: "Wat een voortreffelijke ahadieth! Hadden zij maar vleugels". Met vleugels doelde hij op isnad".
