“Do you think that I don’t know any Qur’an?”

Ad-Dhahabi writes:

أرسل الأمير عيسى بن موسى إلى الأعمش بألف درهم وصحيفة ليكتب فيها حديثا فكتب فيها بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم وقل هو الله أحد ووجه بها إليه فبعث إليه يا ابن الفاعلة ظننت أني لا أحسن كتاب الله فبعث إليه أظننت أني أبيع الحديث

ENGLISH:

"The governor ‘Isa bin Musa sent a notebook along with a thousand dirhams to A’mash for him to write down Hadith in it. So A’mash wrote: "In the Name of Allah, the Beneficient, the Merciful: Qul: Huwallahu Ahad! (Say: "He is Allah, One"), and sent the book back to him. He sent to him, saying: “Do you think that I don’t know any Qur’an?” A’mash sent back, saying: “Do you think that I sell Hadith?!”

"De gouverneur Isa Bin Musa stuurde een notitieboek samen duizend dirhams naar al-Amash zodat hij ahaadith voor hem zou opschrijven. Amash schreef: "In de Naam van Allaah, de Genadige, de Barmhartige: Zeg: Hij is Allah, de Enige", en hij stuurde zijn notitieboek terug. De gouverneur stuurde een brief terug, zeggende: "Denk jij dat ik geen Qur'an ken?!" Amash schreef terug: "Denk jij dat ik ahaadith verkoop?!"
