"What is the gratitude of the eyes?"

Abu Haroon is narrated to have said:

دخلتُ على أبي حازم ، فقلت له : يرحمك الله ، ما شكرُ العينين ؟ قال : إذا رأيتَ بهما خيراً : ذكرته ، وإذا رأيتَ بهما شرّاً : سترته ، قلت : فما شكر الأذنين ؟ قال : إذا سمعتَ بهما خيراً : حفظته ، وإذا سمعتَ بهما شرّاً : نسيتَه

ENGLISH:

Abu Haroon said: "I entered upon Abu Haazim, and said to him: "May Allaah have mercy on you, what is the gratitude of the eyes?" He said: "If you see something good with them, you mention it, and if you see something bad with them, you conceal it". I said: "What is the gratitude of the ears?" He said: "If you hear something good with them, you remember it, and if you hear something bad with them, you forget it".

"Ik trad Abu Hazim's (huis) binnen en zei: "Moge Allah u genadig zijn, hoe tonen wij dankbaarheid voor onze ogen?" Hij zei: "Als u iets goeds ermee ziet dan vertelt u erover, en als u iets slechts ermee ziet dan verbergt u het". Ik vroeg: "En hoe tonen wij dankbaarheid voor onze oren?" Hij zei: "Als u iets goeds mee hoort dan onthoudt u het en als u er iets slechts ermee hoort dan vergeet u het".
